Macheso upstaged in Esigodini

SUNGURA Masters, a group from Bulawayo, on Sunday night outshone Alick “Extra Basso” Macheso’s dancers when they put up a strong 10-minute performance.
Fresh from his tour of the United Kingdom, Extra Basso’s show was held at popular nightspot Jabula Inn and about 300 people braved the cold weather to come and dance the night away.

A notable absentee was controversial dancer and former street kid Peter Kagomera who was reported to be in remand prison. Kagomera was arrested for allegedly biting a police officer in a bid to avoid arrest at Chillers Bottle Store at Ziko Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza on 30 June and his court case was postponed to Thursday.

His absence from the show was evident and it was clear that there was a missing link in the Mberikwazvo dance routine. There was a major difference when the Sungura Masters went on stage.
The six-member group comprising three male and three female dancers showed why their name suggests superiority to other groups with highly energetic dances that brought cheers from fans that had come to see Extra Basso. The three female dancers in thigh- and belly button-revealing green and white outfits got on stage for about two minutes. Their gyrations left male fans in awe and begging for them to come back on stage.
Their male counterparts did the famous Borrowdale Dance at breakneck speed with Extra Basso and Mberikwazvo watching the action closely. The night had ladies spotting skimpy outfits, in spite of the viciously cold weather. Extra Basso got on stage at about 11.45pm and belted out Madawu much to the excitement of the crowd. He played the bass guitar with aplomb with some fans returning the favour with applause.

Extra Basso went on to perform songs such as Tariro, Chimoko Changu, Kudzimamoto, Chikwambo, Wemakonzo, and wrapped up the show with the ever-popular Tafadzwa. Earlier, the Sounds of Muddy Face had kept the revellers on the dance floor. They played fan favourite Samson and Kurara hope, among other tunes.

After the show fans lauded Sungura Masters for a top class performance and said they should keep on dancing. “We enjoyed the show especially the dance group Sungura Masters. They know what they are doing and the dancers from Mberikwazvo were given a run for their money,” said Sijabuliso Sibanda, a small-scale miner from the area.

He said it was difficult to take the “wise waters” because of the night’s chilly weather but would not have missed the show for anything. Patience Ndebele, a flea marketer, said it was a great experience and thanked Macheso for coming to play for them first after his UK tour. She said he should come on Saturdays so that they could enjoy fully his show without thinking of work the following day.

In an aside, a slim woman gave a heavily intoxicated man a thorough beating after he had caressed her buttocks during the show. He was repeatedly beaten with open hands and a shoe for his behaviour. It was only after the intervention of other male revellers who begged for respite, that the woman stopped beating up the man. Chronicle
