Bulawayo- Superstar Oliver “Tuku” Mtukuzi brought Bulawayo to a stand still last night (Friday night ) when he celebrated his 59th birthday in style with more than 2 500 of his fans attending the “Birthday Show” at Large City hall.
Mtukudzi turned 59 years on Thursday 22 September but he decided to celebrate his birthday with a show in Bulawayo last night. Mtukudzi who was being supported by Winky D and Jeys Marabini also unveiled his new Black Spirits band members for the first time in Bulawayo, namely Enock Piroro on bass, Strovers Maswobe on percussion and vocals, Max Chiwara on lead guitar and Blessing Muparutsa on drums.
The new band members played very well with no big difference from the old four band members whom Mtukudzi reportedly fired last month over salary disputes. The International superstar’s birthday cake was presented on stage and his fans sang a “happy birthday” song for him.
He thanked his fans for supporting him in the 33 years he has been in music. When asked by Radio VOP after the show whether he will retire from music since he has turned 59 years, he said: “Not now I am still going strong I will tell you guys when my time for retirement comes.” The International superstar also played some songs from his late son Sam’s album Cheziya which was released in July 2010 after his death.
The song “Chii Chanetsa Baba” kept his fans on the dance floor on Friday night. Sam (22) died on March 15, 2010, in the same horrific crash that killed his close friend Owen Chimhare (24) who was sound engineer in his Ay Band, both had returned from sound mixing Cheziya in South Africa.
At last night’s show Mtukudzi also played his own songs like Dzandimomotera, Mutavara, Tozeza Baba and many others. Marabini opened Tuku’s “Birthday Show” with excellent performance and Winky D closed it with a bang. Mtukudzi began performing in 1977 when he joined the Wagon Wheels, a band which also featured Thomas Mapfumo. Their single, “Dzandimomotera,” went gold and Tuku’s first album followed, which was also a major success. Mtukudzi is also a contributor to Mahube Southern Africa’s ‘supergroup’.
