Tongai's no Show at BIG 5 Concert in Harare

The much anticipated ‘biggest gig of the year’, the Big 5 Concert, aka Zim’s Finest, which brought together the most followed musicians in the country, was turned into a Big 4 do as Tongai Dhewa Moyo failed to turn up at the September 30 event held at Glamis Arena.

Dhewa’s band members and dancers could be seen all over the place waiting for their turn to perform as they eagerly expected their boss to arrive, but it was not to be. Zimbo Jam talked to some of the dancers who said that they did not have a word as to why their boss did not come.
“Tichiri takangomirira kusvika kwamdara ndofunga ndipo patichaenda pastage. (We are still waiting for our boss maybe that is when we will perform),” said one dancer who refused to be named because of their band protocol.

It is widely believed that Tongai Moyo failed to come because of his prevailing ill health. The musician is battling cancer and it has been said that he has deteriorated in the past few months. Some of his band members had a feel of the stage when they joined the jam session which had the other performers of the day who are, Winky D, Alick Macheso, Oliver Mtukudzi and Sulumani Chimbetu.

Meanwhile, Alick Macheso benefited from Dhewa’s absence as he borrowed the services of Shiga Shiga to replace the ailing Jonas Kasamba as his backing vocalist. Dhewa’s dancer, Officer, also joined Macheso on stage. Although Moyo failed to turn up, the present artists did a marvellous job of keeping the crowd entertained till early morning when the last note was played.

Tuku’s new band gave a good showing of themselves and the crowd was cheering and dancing away throughout his set. About 4000 people attended the show and many were there till about 0430hrs when the show ended. - Trevor Makonyonga for Zimbo Jam
