Willom Tight's son ventures into Music

Willom Tight's musical fortunes is waning, he has been very quiet. During his days he churned beautiful afro centric jazz tunes such as 'Ndinoda Wangu" is a melodious song with sweet backing vocals. His collaboration with Dino Mudondo saw them churning many hits that took the Zimbabwean music by storm.

His only son Gary has burst on the musical scene and is determined to ensure that this dad's musical flame keeps on flickering. The 16-year-old gwenyambira is surely on a mission if his achievements to date, hopes and aspirations are anything to go by. Gary has assembled an eight-piece boy band, Zion Originated which plays Afro-jazz acoustics.
The outfit was formed last year and band members’ ages range from 13 to 18. “The group was started last year at a concert called Da Bomb which was held at Faith Ministries where I played solo mbira. “I then met with Tinotenda Mahara and then I decided that I had to start an all boys band. “I was taught to play mbira by the late Taku Mafika,” said the Churchill Boys High scholar.

The Afro-jazz contemporary band fuses almost all instruments, but Gary says they want to make sure our traditional mbira is accorded much 'respect' as other foreign instruments. “My aim is to make sure that mbira is taken to a higher level because people usually look down upon it opting for the electrical instruments.” Gary says his father has been a great inspiration as he has been supportive throughout, adding that “I also just love music. It’s something that is natural in me.”
