Europe-based internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean disc jockey, Deon Fulton, aka DJ Smoove, is back in the country and is set to rock the nation’s clubbing scene for a while. DJ Smoove said he was happy to be back home after living in Europe for 20 years. He said he was passionate about the local music industry thus he would be performing in various places.
These include Red Fox Hotel on Thursday nights for mature crowds, on Fridays he would be visiting various cities and on Saturdays he would perform at promotional parties. “I plan to stay in the country for a year or two and I feel the need to work with other local DJs so that they realise their dreams,” said DJ Smoove.
He said Zimbabwe had so much talent that needed to be exposed and well managed. DJ Smoove said it was important for the local DJs to take a leaf from their international counterparts. “It seems there are more South African DJs coming to perform here and a few of us going there. It pains me that the industry is not taking full advantage of this relationship. I wish South African promoters would invite our local DJs on numerous occasions.” He said a lot of musicians like Oliver Mtukudzi and Chiwoniso Maraire had gained international acclaim through going to perform in other countries thus it was also necessary for DJs to follow suit.
DJ Smoove said he has worked with a lot of the world’s best musicians and DJs. He mentioned names like R Kelly, P Diddy, BeyoncĂ©, Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes, Phatman Scoop, DJ Klue, Tony Matterhorn and Trevor Nelson as some of the artists he worked on projects with. “I started out confined to Soul and R&B but during my performance at the World Cup in SA last year I learnt house music is becoming popular and I guess I have to follow the market’s demand.” DJ Smoove said he would in December release his debut album titled DJ Kronicles Volume 1, a 14-track offering, which he did in various countries with various producers.
He said the album which had mixed music styles, would feature upcoming and established local artists. He said during his stay in Africa for World Cup 2010 he also managed to tour other countries like Tanzania, Ghana, Botswana and Kenya, but never experienced anything that beats Zimbabwe. “Besides being a DJ, I also love swimming and playing soccer which I do very often. I am not married, but I am not in a hurry to find someone although I believe in settling down one day.” (Newsday)
