TOP Jamaican dancehall artiste Mavado - real name David Constantine Brooks - becomes the first top billing international artiste to perform in Zimbabwe this year when he has a romance with Zimbabwean dancehall music lovers at two shows scheduled for the Harare International Conference Centre and Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex respectively.
His tour of Zimbabwe kicks off with a show tonight at the HICC and he will take his act to Chitungwiza tomorrow. Chitungwiza has become one of the port of calls of Jamaican artistes because of its ghetto appeal that is reminiscent of the high-density suburbs of Jamaica. Initially, the Jamaican artiste was expected to perform in the country late last year, but the show failed to materialise after one of his band members reportedly lost his mother.
Mavado's show is sponsored by C&A Entertainment, the promotion company that brought a number of foreign artistes to Zimbabwe. Mavado (pictured left) has a catalogue of songs that appeal to people of ghetto orientation but this does not mean that his music is confined to that clique at the expense of the elite.
Tickets have been on sale since the much hyped show was announced and it remains to be seen whether he will surpass the bar that was set by some of his fellow artistes who have performed in Zimbabwe. These include Beenie Man, Sizzla Kalonji and King Sounds, Maxi Priest and Fantan Mojah. (Herald)
