Rising sungura star Peter Moyo popularly dubbed“Young Igwe” did not disappoint fans at City Sports Bar in Harare Thursday night. The young Utakataka front-man has proved to the revellers that he is the right heir to his late father Tongai Moyo’s music legacy, both by right and talent.
Before belting out the Utakataka songs to the expectant audience, Peter Moyo was asked to hand over an award (Amarula beer bottle) to the best Sele dancer of the night which was scooped by the former Miss Matofotofo, Monica Chikasha known in the showbiz circuit as Mama Sele. Chikasha is also a big Utakataka Express fan.
While on the stage to hand over the award, Peter appeared disoriented by the warm reception by the audience. Peter’s seeming diffidence puzzled many revellers in the bar including this reporter who wondered whether he was going to satisfy the fans with the much-loved Dhewa music. Without taking much of his fans’ time, the young Igwe Peter was behind the “powerful” microphone and proved to his fans that it is not good to judge the book by its cover.
After midnight the Utakataka was exponentially gaining morale and confidence which had been rising with each passing hour. The show picked up momentum as Peter churned Tongai Moyo’s all time hits like Naye, Tsamba, Muchina Muhombe, Ganda remvura, Kapuka kanonzi rudo, Sunga Dzisimbe among other tracks to the fully packed City Sports Bar.
Peter’s voice resembled that of his late father Tongai. The Utakataka Express’ Shiga-shiga kept the revellers on their feet while chanting the popular slogan “Sisi, toita basa!” and the band’s bassist Spencer “The bolt cutter” Khumbulani was a marvel to watch as he showcased what he knows best.
