Leonard Dembo's widow bitter with the Media

The late Leonard Dembo
Eunice Munati, wife of the late Leonard ‘Musoro Wenyoka’ Dembo, has so far shunned the media saying she is not impressed with the level of practitioners’ professionalism.  “Since 1996 the Daily News is the first I have spoken to. The media in Zimbabwe have a tendency of fabricating stories. And because of that my interest in the media was put off,” she said.

Her son Tendai made headlines in the media for wrong reasons and she said family voices were lacking in the stories. Recently, the media reported that Tendai had tried to commit suicide after he discovered that Sharon, daughter of Alick Macheso, was double dating him with Sulumani Chimbetu’s cousin Ally.

Munati said the media was supposed to seek family comments first before publishing a story based “on rumours”. Following the death of the legend in 1996, Munati kept herself out of media’s craving eyes.  “For instance, I refused to comment on the Tendai’ alleged suicide attempt, because the media rushed to publish an untrue story,” she said.

“Media practitioners should strive to uphold professional standards.“They should first consider the impact the story is going to have on the society before rushing to publish it. Journalists should research thoroughly before publishing a story but because you have a tendency of publishing stories from your own minds, I find it worthwhile to stay away from the media,” she said (Newsday)
