Mercy Mutsvene has released a jingle celebrating President Robert Mugabes 88th birthday, making her the latest in line of the Presidents praise singers. Titled Happy Birthday VaMugabe, the jingle is being played on national radio and television. Speaking to NewsDay yesterday, Tongai Nheta, Mutsvenes husband who doubles as her manager, said his wife was simply celebrating the freedom that the President brought to the nation.
The fact that she has recorded a jingle for the President does not in any way suggest that she is now into politics, said Nheta. Mercy is not the first gospel artist to record a jingle for the President and I must say we are not ashamed to be associated with President Robert Mugabe. He said people should admit the President was a hero and his birthday should be celebrated by everyone who felt like it.
Many people around the world celebrate Christmas, but that does not mean they are all Christians. If anyone does not want to celebrate freedom, it is up to them, Nheta said. Even the Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday (Tuesday) celebrated the Presidents birthday. Mutsvene is not the first musician to get sucked into politics as Andy Brown, Brian Taurai Mteki, Last Tambaoga Chiyangwa, Sister Flame and recently Diana Samkange, among others, have done so.
This involvement has often proven to be disastrous for them as the stars of the musicians have tended to wane soon afterwards.Mutsvene has often hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons with the major one being the turmoil that rocked her love life while she also suffered heavy criticism for reproducing Rebecca Malopes songs. Her career has been on the decline over the past couple of years. (Newsday)
