Alick Macheso |
Music superstar Alick Macheso played his heart out at Sunday’s afternoon concert at Harare’s City Sports Bar gardens. With the rains threatening the much publicised concert, hundreds of fans ignored the weather and converged in the gardens for what turned out to be a wet outing.
The rains, coming in drizzles evaporated as audiences chose to ignore them and danced to sungura beats coming from one of today’s most lively entertainer. Braai fires around the venue dozed drizzle and it was merry and fun in the rain.
A favourite of many youthful musicians, Macheso’s concert was graced by among others Peter “Igwe” Moyo and Tryson Chimbetu who both made impromptu stage appearances to the delight of fans. Sexy dancer of the moment Bev Sibanda also jumped onto the stage and did her own ndombolo dance to the amazement of audiences.
As with Macheso’s concerts, a number of surprise dancers from the crowd turned out to be a highlight for the whole afternoon. At the end of his showcase, Macheso was joined by Tryson and his dancers and everything else became dendera. Macheso has a gift to sing as was witnessed by his vocals on the dendera songs that followed.
“Mwana wangu iyeyu, takatozomurumura (he (Tryson) is my son, but we decided to let him go solo),” said Macheso as he introduced Tryson. The two musicians then played some duet guitar-strings only aided by the drummer. With Tryson holding onto the lead and rhythm lines, Macheso played the bass guitar and for once you could think it was a full band.
There was applause and joy when prodigal lead guitarist, Nowell Nyazanda re-joined Mberikwazvo band at the concert. Nyazanda, who had defected to dendera music star Suluman Chimbetu’s band returned with a bang as he strummed the guitar in a fashion that marked the difference from when he was absent.
A number of women mobbed the guitarist on stage as they welcomed him back. Macheso was equally delighted that his prodigal son was back in the fold. Mamuonaka Nowell, adzoka, said Macheso.
Nyazanda told the Daily News last week that while he had a good working relationship with Suluman, he simply could not find his place. “It is true I am no longer with Dendera Kings. I just decided to leave, there are no reasons. I can’t say anything was bad in the group. Sulu treated me well, everything was right but I was just not comfortable,” said Nyazanda.
One can imagine the changes from hard core sungura beats to strutting dendera rhythms. William Tsandukwa, Macheso’s band manager said he was dumbfounded by Nyazanda’s return considering he left the band citing lack of adequate incentives.
Last week Tsandukwa told the Daily News that Nyazanda reported to Macheso’s Chitungwiza offices on Monday and the team met on Wednesday for three hours racking their heads on the position to take. “He came to us and said he wanted to come back.
We could not believe it. We did not understand because of the way he left us. As a manager I said I could talk to my boss. On Wednesday we met for three hours and we decided to get views from other people. We later met some promoters to find their opinion on whether we should take him back.”
Tsandukwa said a guitarist called Devine had already come in for Nyazanda but issues could be ironed out as human beings. “Nyazanda tarnished the band’s name. We did not fail him but anyway people do digress sometimes and we can help to have his career back on track.” Culled from Dailynews
