Violence flared up last Friday at Destiny Night Club in Warren Park in Harare when enraged revellers smashed bottles and threw chairs in protest at Peter Moyo’s delay to pitch up for a gig. About 400 revellers who had paid $5 to watch the “Young Igwe” live on stage were incensed when he failed to appear at the advertised time.
Harpers Mapimhidze, Destiny Night Club manager said: “People started getting restless when Peter failed to come on stage at 9pm, his billed time." “Some revellers started smashing bottles and chairs, turning the whole situation into a chaos. We decided to get Orchestra Vazvamburi on stage but this supporting act was relying on Peter’s instruments so we could not easily get out of this fix.”
The bar manager said police had to be called in to control the situation although no arrests were made.
He said about 40 people forced entry to the joint without paying in the ensuing chaos. After the police restored order, “Young Igwe” and his Utakataka Express swaggered into the venue just before mid-night and jumped on stage 10 minutes afterwards.
Mapimhidze said his coming on stage was magical as the restless crowd cooled down and started enjoying the show. The Daily News heard that Peter and his band were held up at another function before they made their way to Warren Park. Mapimhidze alleged Peter’s manager had double booked.
“The manager misinformed us and it was wrong for him to double book. Peter apologised to his fans and gave a good show.” Mapimhidze urged Peter’s manager to be professional as this can be a detriment to Moyo’s career.
Peter’s manager denied allegations of double booking. “It was not double booking, we were 30 minutes late from another show and we informed the promoters. Our shows were planned and we communicated with the promoters,” he said. Peter’s manager said they were on stage at 11.30pm. DAILY NEWS
