| Willom Tight |
They are back. And what better way to make their grand return than on the hallowed stages of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) slated for May 1 to 6, 2012. Performing in the Landrover 7 Arts Theatre at Hifa this year, afro-jazz crooner and composer Willom Tight is bouncing back as one of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished young musicians.
Tight, performing with his backing group the Tight Family, has recently released his fourth album entitled Chinyere”, causing a stir on the music scene. After a break, this new album has been warmly welcomed by fans across the region.
“Chinyere” addresses everyday issues affecting Zimbabweans and, while Tight is personally quiet and humble, this album speaks out loud for those without a voice. “Yabatwa” addresses the confusion many people face when new money comes their way. “Mukoma Joe”, another favourite, rebukes people for their misdemeanours, ranging from alcohol and child abuse to the spread of HIV.
Tight also pays tribute to the late Sam Mtukudzi in the track “Wakaenda Usina Kuoneka”. “Sam was like a young brother to me”, he said. “When he died, we were in the middle of recording a track together and I then decided to dedicate this one to him.”
Willom Tight and the Tight Family have shared the stage with many of Southern Africa’s leading musicians, such as Jabu Khanyile, Oliver Mtukudzi. Their performance at Hifa is awaited with bated breath after their break from the music scene. They are back in full force and are ready to show fans their spirit at Hifa and with their latest album.
Festival organisers have expressed confidence in Tight and other local artistes being able to hold their own against their visiting counterparts. With Zimbabwe’s premier artistic fete only a few weeks away, festival organisers have encouraged audiences to make sure they purchase their tickets early for this and other moeuvres in the extensive programme to avoid the oft-experience of situation of missing out on a sold-out Hifa show.
