Macheso's Tora Bute dance thrills fans in Esigodini

Macheso in action
TORA Bute dance rocked Esigodini on Sunday night, as Alick “Zorai Butter” Macheso and the Orchestra Mberikwazo brought the house down leaving revellers enthralled after a six-hour performance at popular spot, Jabula Inn.

Macheso showed why he is touted as king of sungura music with his well-choreographed dance routines and skill on the bass guitar. Clad in a green checkered shirt and black beret, Macheso took to the stage at 11.30pm.

He started his performance with Chikwambo, which sent the plus 300 partisan crowd into frenzy. His supporting vocalists who doubled as dancers kept the crowd that had gathered on their feet. A dancer named MaJuice mesmerised the crowd with his dance antics.

Macheso went on to perform songs such as Tariro, Mundikumbuke, Wemakonzo, Tafadzwa and wrapped up the show with MaDuve. Even a light shower could not dampen the revellers mood as they kept dancing the night away. During the show, popular Bulawayo raunchy dance groups, Exotic Rhumba Dancers and Girls La Musica kept the crowd entertained as they took to the stage with the sungura maestro.

There was an emotional moment when Macheso played Pakanaka Dewa, a tribute to the late sungura kingpin Tongai Moyo. Macheso could not hide his emotions as he openly shed tears when he played the song, bearing testimony that he missed his fellow musician. In an interview after the show, lead guitarist Taffy Tafirenyika said their weekend had been busy because on Friday they were in Masvingo, Saturday, Beitbridge and on Sunday at Esigodini.

He said their next show would be on 24 May at the Amphitheatre in Bulawayo. “We have had a busy weekend and the Zorai Butter and Tora Bute dances have been in Masvingo, Beitbridge and today we are in Esigodini. “Bulawayo fans should look forward to Zorai Butter and Tora Bute show on 24 May at the Amphitheatre,” said Tafirenyika.

After the show, as revellers made their way to their respective homes full of praise for the sungura maestro, they said he should return for another show. They, however, bemoaned the high price of the wise waters. “I never leave a Macheso show disappointed. He should come back and we are definitely going to his show,” said Methuseli Jongosi, a small-scale miner in the area. Chronicle
