The usually serene town of Marondera is set to roar into life tomorrow with an event dubbed “Tuku Festival” at Malwatte Village. The first of its kind, the festival is to celebrate Oliver Mtukudzi’s musical prowess and his recent 60th birthday.
The festival will see the granddads of Zimbabwe music Mtukudzi and Steve Chikoti sharing the stage with Daiton Somanje and Club Shanga, among others. According to the event organiser Mark Scott of Malwatte Village, the festival will be an open air concert.
“This is the first of its kind, an open air concert to be held at Malwatte Village and we have dubbed it the “Tuku Festival” for he will be the main act who is going to perform from 11pm till dawn,” said Scott.
“He has just celebrated his 60th birthday and this festival is to honour him. Moreover, the festival coincides with the beginning of Culture Week and Tuku is a well-knwonn cultural ambassador. With bands like Club Shanga, Pengaudzoke and other upcoming artists billed to perform, it promises to be a good event.”
The show starts at 1pm on Saturday and is expected to end on Sunday morning. Tuku, who gave a pulsating performance during the closing ceremony of this year’s edition of Harare International Festival of the Arts, is expected to wow the crowds as the superstar rarely short-changes his legion of fans.
On the other hand, popular Marondera-based Pengaudzoke will be honoured to play for the first time at a big event this year in their hometown where they also command a huge following.
Somanje will have an opportunity to perform some of the songs from their latest album Zvinowanikwa. Afro-shangara group, Club Shanga, who will be rubbing shoulders with Tuku, Chikoti and Pengaudzoke for the first time, are expected to prove their capabilities. Newsday
