Promoter honours Dhewa

The late Sungura maestro - Tongai Moyo
Mutare-based music promoter and close family friend to the late sungura legend Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo, Brian Samaita is set to release a six-track album this June in honor of the musician. Samaita, who took Dhewa to most parts of Manicaland, said the death of his friend prompted him to set up his own band which he assembled with the help of some of the former Utakatata Express band members.

Seasoned instrumentalists who feature on the album include Spencer Kumulani and Innocent Mujintu. In an interview with NewsDay yesterday Samaita said he felt he should release an album to honour his close friend.

“We shared the same vision with Tongai though I was his promoter. Our friendship spilled into close family ties and he was like a brother to me,” said Samaita. Samaita dedicated the song Nguva to his late friend and said he is now in the business of music for ever.

“I am assembling my own band, Murondatsimba Express but on this album I worked with some seasoned musicians. “I was taught to play the guitar by Spencer and I have decided to set up a band that will back me during live shows.”
