South Africa honours film writer Joe Njagu

Joe Njagu
Zimbabwean film writer and director Joe Njagu was recently honoured by a South African non-governmental organisation for his exploits in the film industry. Njagu was named in the top 35 Under-35 Young African Leaders in International Affairs in the media category by the Young People in International Affairs (YPIA). Speaking to NewsDay recently, Njagu could not hide his joy saying he owed his success to God.

I am thrilled and humbled at the same time and as always this is all Gods glory, not mine. I am just a vessel being used, he said. When I won best director last year in America I never thought anything was going to beat it and now this recognition from YPIA confirms that I am on the right path in my walk.

In a congratulatory email to Njagu, the organisers said: You are truly making an immense impact in your country, on the African continent and worldwide. You have exceeded the standards of expectation within your respective field and proven yourself as a trailblazer, while leading your communities to follow suit and strive for excellence.

Other accolades in Njagus cabinet include best director award from the American Film Festival for the movie The Gentleman. The 28-year-old said he was working on new projects that should be ready before year end. I am working on a movie script at the moment which would be shot in October, as well as a sitcom and talk show reality for television, said Njagu. The other Zimbabwean winner in the same category was 18-year-old model Nyasha Matonhodze.

The young model, who is riding high in the fashion world, was chosen as the new face of Louis Vuitton and has starred in the Maisons Fall/Winter 2011 advertising campaign. Matonhodze is signed under French modelling agency, Elite Model Look, and has graced many international runway shows. Information, Communication and Technology minister Nelson Chamisa and lawyer Otto Saki, a former acting director of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, were also honoured in the political field.
