Chi saddened by Andy Brown’s death

Mbira maestro Chiwoniso Maraire former wife of the late Andy Brown, yesterday said she could not say anything on the passing of the man she was once very close to saying, ‘‘It is too painful’’. 

Maraire’s marriage to Brown ended in 2001. It was marked with high passion with allegations of Brown being violent with her on a number of occasions. Their union was however, one of the most powerful meeting of authoritative musicians in marriage.

Mbira artist Chiwoniso Maraire cancelled two weekend performances in honour of her late ex-husband Andy Brown. Brown died from pneumonia on Friday afternoon at Parirenyatwa Hospital. Maraire was scheduled to perform at the official opening of the new Book Café on Friday evening and at the launch of a music programme titled “Move” at Red Bar, Newlands on Saturday.

Chiwoniso to headline Women's History month Concert

MBIRA queen Chiwoniso Maraire is the major drawcard at the New Generation being hosted by the US Embassy on February 29. The event marks the conclusion of the of the Black History Month that is commemorated every February while it also signals the beginning of the Women's History Month commemorated in March.

New Generation Events have in the past featured Zimbabwean and American musicians including jazz crooner Victor Kunonga and singer-songwriter Ryan Koriya. The Black history month is used to honour the too often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavour throughout the American history. “When we think about Black History Month and Women's History Month, we realise that people worldwide have shared similar historical challenges in struggles for equality and dignity.
