Will sanity ever prevail at Mereki, the popular open-air braai and “watering hole” that resembles the tshisa nyamas” found in Hillbrow in South Africa? Just when many people thought the usually brisk and noisy place had a proper facelift with the new lavatories, state-of-the-art car wash and tap water, for some the place has outlived itself, noisy and pretty boring.

KwaMereki opening suspended indefinitely

HARARE City Council has indefinitely postponed the reopening of the popular braai spot – KwaMereki – until the typhoid outbreak has been completely eradicated. The open air braai centre was expected to be open last Saturday. City spokesman Mr Leslie Gwindi yesterday confirmed the latest development. “We are reviewing the situation on a daily basis to check on typhoid. Until we are satisfied that there is no more typhoid in the city we then reconsider the reopening. We do not have a specific date yet,” he said.

KwaMereki Comes back to life

One of Harare’s most popular drive-in joints, KwaMereki in Warren Park D, which was shut down a week ago in a bid to control the outbreak of typhoid in the capital, has been reopened with a facelift and ablution facilities. Although not yet officially opened by the relevant authorities, revellers could be seen drinking and enjoying their favourite meal sadza and roasted meat.
