Sharon Macheso bares her soul

Sharon Macheso (pictured), the daughter to the sungura maestro Alick “Extrabasso” Macheso has been on the limelight for a while, albeit for wrong reasons. Her first controversial appearance in the media was in an article alleging that she was seeing her father’s dancer Francis Dhaka, aka Franco. Reports suggested that she was pregnant with the dancer’s child.

She was then linked to the late Sam Mtukudzi who was also said to be madly in love with her. Then the late Simon Chimbetu’s son, Ali was reported to be in love with Sharon. Ali fumed about the issue. Early this year Sharon was said to be head over heels in love with Tendai Dembo, son to the late Leonard Dembo.

Her alleged affair with Dembo proved a hot issue. Just three months ago, Dembo was said to have taken poison after revelations that his “darling” Sharon had been spotted with Ali at a night club. When she was hospitalised in September, she was said to have had a backyard abortion that went wrong.

Whether there are grains of truth in some or all of the stories, Sharon was quoted vehemently dismissing the allegations. But people are now very familiar with her because of the publicity. She is turning into a celebrity outside her father’s shadow. Could she be the Zimbabwean version of Paris Hilton?

Fact is that she is the only non-artist child of a Zimbabwean artist to attract such publicity. StandardLife&Style visited Sharon at their family house in Chitungwiza to get insight into her much publicised lifestyle. “I being Macheso’s daughter and Sam being Tuku’s son meant we were in a defined community of our own but that does not mean we were in love,” she explained.

“At first I was frustrated but I am now used to it and I can laugh such articles off. There is a bond that is between me and the Dembo siblings because of who their father was and there is nothing fussy about that.”
When asked where her real boyfriend was, Sharon said he was in South Africa but claimed not to know what he is doing there.

“He is in school but I do not know what he is studying. He moved to Cape Town eight months ago. He had been in the United States before that. But I really would not want to say much about his issues because I suppose this is about me and not him,” said Sharon, who maintains she is still a virgin. When this reporter arrived at the Macheso residence, Sharon was in a blue floral nightdress and rushed to change when she saw the camera.

She came back clad in a colourful summer floral dress while her friend, Samantha Marozoki who stays one house away was clad in blue denim shorts and a spaghetti top. “Last time another news crew came here. I was in the same night dress and it would be awkward for me to appear in the press with the same attire. Samantha and I grew up together and we are like sisters. She can tell you more about me,” she said before Samantha intervened.

“I do not know why people are always making up all kinds of stories about Sharon. She and I are like sisters and it really is stinging sometimes when the media publishes such things,” said Samantha. Asked what sort of entertainment they liked Sharon said: “We are fun loving people and we usually hang out at outdoor places and sometimes kuMarasta at Red Fox Hotel. We are always together.”

Sharon, who turns 22 on Tuesday, said she holds a Diploma in top flight secretarial and a certificate in Information Technology. “I am about to embark on a marketing programme but ultimately my dream is designing. That explains the experiments that I do with clothes and I believe one day people will be dressing from the Shaz clothing line that I intend to start.” (Zimstd)
