Tongai Moyo honoured through dance

DANCERS' Association of Zimbabwe honoured the late sungura musician Tongai Moyo at an event held at Londoner's Night Club in Harare recently. Close to 10 dance groups performed at the function, which paid tribute to the late singer, with 30 percent of the gate-takings being donated to the Moyo family. Tongai passed on last month after a long battle with cancer.

Various dance groups presented well-choreographed acts to accompany one of Dhewa's songs "Muchina Muhombe". In his speech, read on his behalf by an official from his department, Media, Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu said Dhewa's death was a big blow to the nation. "Tears alone are not sufficient to mourn a musical giant such as ‘Dhewa' but an occasion such as this, organised by the Dancers' Association of Zimbabwe, is a clear testimony that Tongai Moyo will always be missed for his musical exploits," Minister Shamu said.

Harpers Mapimhidze, organiser of the show, said: "We decided to come together as dance groups and pay tribute to the late musician, Tongai Moyo, whose music we normally use during our shows." "He was one of the country's finest sungura musicians and his music appealed to people across the board, and this made it (the music) a natural favourite of most dance groups." The occasion drew several artistes and personalities that included Dino Mudondo, former Miss Matofotofo Monica "Sele" Chikasha and Utakataka Express chanter-cum-manager Shiga Shiga. Though he is no more, Tongai arguably remains one of the greatest musicians to come out of Zimbabwe.
