Clash of titans at Aquatic Complex

Oliver Mtukudzi, Jah Prayzah and Alick Macheso
They say you can change the frame but you can never change the picture, perhaps this is what music lovers should expect when they join Oliver Mtukudzi, Alick Macheso and Jah Prayzah live on stage on June 1, 2012.

It doesn’t matter where and when you take Mtukudzi and Macheso, the two who are some of Zimbabwe’s sought-after performers will simply rock you. And when you put the rising Jah Prayzah in the picture you know you have “one hell of a party”. By the way it will be the first of the month and you know its showtime.
Musician Jah Prayzah is like a guy from next door but his fans see and adore him in the same way as renowned artistes like Tuku and Macheso’s fans behave. This is because while other musicians take ages to reach the pinnacle of their careers, Jah Prayzah — born Mukudzei Mukombe — has done so in a short period of time thanks to his hits “Ngwarira Kuparara” and “Gochi Gochi” which have become anthems throughout the clubs and pubs dotted in Harare.

So popular are the songs that Jah Prayzah easily passes as the man-of-the moment. He is set to feature alongside Tuku and Macheso, affectionately known in music circles as “Extrabasso”.
The gig slated for Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex has all the markings of a thriller, especially that it would be on a month-end when most revellers have some cash to spend.

Already this year’s winter promises to be a cold one and the Aquatic Complex appears to be an ideal venue for this sort of massive gig. Whenever Extrabasso shares the stage with Tuku fans get value for their money as the two artistes display maturity and great showmanship on stage. It’s a pity that Tuku who has over 100 songs up his sleeve can only play a number of songs to try and satisfy everyone before he says goodbye to his fans.

But one hopes that he delivers a thrilling act spiced by all the hits that made him a star that he is today. As for “Extrabasso”, there is not one gig where he disappointed his legion of fans because every show is different from the previous one. Although here and there he introduces new dances it appears his popularity hinges on his chart toppers among them “Charakupa”, “Madhawu”, “Makandidana”, “Chimoko Changu”, “Tafadzwa”, in fact the list is endless.

Show organiser, Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions said besides the three known musicians there is going to be a guest performer. “We have been inundated with calls from fans asking who this guest performer is and we are still keeping it a secret. ‘However, the guest performer is in the same league as the artistes on the bill and he shall be revealed in due course,” Chipaz said.
