Mr Ugly contest goes to Manicaland

Preparations for Mr Ugly Manicaland are underway with the provincial competition pegged for Pavillion Bar in Mutare on August 4. About eight contestants have so far registered for the competition which will see the winner walking away with a yet undisclosed prize plus a ticket to Mr Ugly Zimbabwe to be held later this year in the capital.

Mr Ugly competitions have proved popular around the country after Harare Province held such a successful event last month. The Harare competition was won by William Masvinu who shrugged off stiff completion from seven other contestants.
In an interview, show organiser David Machowa, popularly known as Apama, confirmed the contest.
“Mutare will host Mr Ugly Manicaland provincial finals that will see the winner taking part in the national contest. We have started visiting all the provinces so that we gather all the ugly men in the country before choosing Mr Ugly Zimbabwe. So far about eight contestants have registered for the competition and I believe the number will double by the time of the competition.

“This is a continuation of greater things to come as far as the contest is concerned. We are trying to organise a national event where we will have Mr Ugly Zimbabwe. “After this Mr Ugly Harare event, we are also going to host the Miss Ugly Harare, which will also lead to national finals,” he said.

The contest, which is supported by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, made headlines following its inception in Beitbridge a few years ago. The unique contest has the potential to become one of the biggest competitions in the country.

However, people have blasted the contest for its poor prizes with the reigning Mr Ugly Harare Masvinu getting a paltry of $100. Newsday
