Macheso, Ezra Tshisa Sibanda and Oliver Mtukudzi |
OLIVER Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso touched down in London on Thursday promising memorable gigs in London and Leicester. The two stars arrived at Heathrow Airport just after 9AM in a travelling party of 18.
Mtukudzi arrived with his wife, Daisy, his daughter, Samantha Nengomasha, and six members of his Black Spirits band while Macheso is backed by an eight man-strong band and a manager. One man who was missing from Macheso’s group is dancer Peter Kagomera, 24, who was arrested last week for allegedly biting a police officer while resisting arrest for “disorderly conduct”.

Macheso told New Zimbabwe.com at the Heathrow that Kagomera – who was homeless when he joined his band – had a difficult past. “Peter grew up in the streets; that’s where I found him. It takes time to reform and I think he needs our patience.
I am trying to tell him that growing on the streets should not prevent you from being a better person and showing your gift to the world,” Macheso said.
It’s Macheso and Mtukudzi’s second joint tour of the UK after their November 2008 collaboration.
Macheso said: “It’s been a while since we were last here. London fans have been always good to us but Leicester is always exceptional. “We have put in the hours preparing for these gigs. From our end we hope our performances are going to be something the fans will remember to their graves.”
Ezra Tshisa Sibanda, a spokesman for the promoters, warned fans to arrive at the venues early to avoid missing out on the performances. "We have two big bands and we are aiming for an early start at both venues so that both have ample time on stage. It would be sad if people came late and missed out on one of the acts. Doors open at 10PM at both venues," he said. Dates for Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso’s UK tour:
# Friday, July 6: Oasis Banquetting Suite, 6-8 Thames Road, Barking, London IG11 0HZ
# Saturday, July 7: Athena, Queen Street, Leicester, LE1 1QD
Advance tickets cost £25, more at the door. For information call 07985568995 or 07888893892
