WeUtonga appeals to fans

Edith WeUtonga in action
It is rare to find a public figure or a celebrity frequently looked upon as an inspiration to many people, humbling themselves and seeking financial help from ordinary people.
This is the case with up-and-coming Afro-traditional musician Edith Katiji, aka Edith weUtonga. She appealed to her fans and friends on the social platform Facebook on Sunday for financial assistance to enable her to attend the Blankets and Wine Festival in Kenya, on September 2.

The festival is a premier Afro-based monthly picnic-style music extravaganza in East Africa designed to showcase Afro-fusion musical genres. It started in 2008. Music superstar Oliver Mtukudzi and Chiwoniso Maraire have performed there before.

“The trip will cost us about $880 per individual and about $8 000 for the whole eight-piece band and honestly, we do not have that kind money. So after realising that I had over 5 000 friends on Facebook I just took a gamble, gathered my guts and thought it was better I tried to appeal than regret later,” Katiji said.
