In search of Zimbabwe's next Idol

A 1990s ZTV talent show is returning to the small screen after plans for nationwide auditions were unveiled on Saturday. StarBrite is credited with launching the musical careers of singers like Prudence Katomani-Mbofana, Matthew Kaunda and CJ Besa among others. Now the show’s original hosts Barney Mpariwa and Vambe ‘VJ’ Jirira are teaming up again to go on a nationwide talent search beginning in Marondera on September 15.
Any individual with some sort of talent can audition before a panel of judges – from singers, dancers, to comedians. Production company Events R Us has struck a deal with ZTV to broadcast pre-recorded auditions and later screen live shows from the semi-final stage. A spokesman said: “StarBrite is a tried and tested brand that predates the popular Western programmes like American Idol, Pop Idol, America Has Got Talent and X-Factor. “Pursuant to our original objectives, Events R Us has been working behind the scenes over the last 18 months to revive StarBrite, this time much bigger and more interactive.” The winner of the show will walk away with a R200,000 cash prize and earn a fully paid trip to Las Vegas.
