Miss Curve national contest tomorrow night

Nineteen curvaceous beauties from around Zimbabwe will this weekend take part in Miss Curvy national finals beauty contest in Harare. It will be held at the Platinum Lounge in Borrowdale on Saturday night. The beauty pageant in its debut has already become popular with locals after preliminary contests were held in Bulawayo, Harare and Mutare.

Mercy Mushaninga owner of the Zimbabwe Gossip Modelling Agency - which is organising the event, said the agency was making a stand against the discrimination that the typical figured African woman faced in the modelling industry.

"We have African women being undermined because of their size. We want to debase this Western notion, that only the slim ‘size six' women qualify to be models", she said. Part sponsor of the beauty contest Mama Red Rose real name Babra Chikosi said "African women are curvaceous by nature and as such we should celebrate that beauty".

Most beauty pageants operate on the misguided discriminatory premise that the svelte figure is the only true definition of beauty that deserves recognition. The lucky big beautiful lady on that night will walk away with prize money of US$1 000 from the agency and a return air ticket to Victoria falls courtesy of Red Rose Entertainment. The first princess would receive US$400 while the second princess will cash in US$200.

The event has attracted much attention causing a stir in the region, as neighbouring nations have already signed up to participate in Miss Curvy Southern Africa which will be held next year in April. Preparations are underway to take the contest to other parts of the continent and subsequently the rest of the world.
