After seven years of work, Playing Warriors , a feature-length film written and directed by NAMA award winning film maker, Rumbi Katedza, premieres at the 7 Arts theatre Playing Warriors is a sexy comedy with a social conscience. The film focuses on the lives of four friends – modern young women in the city – and how they struggle to find a balance between the traditional expectations of their parents and society whilst balancing their own dreams.
Set against the backdrop of Nyarai’s (Kudzai Sevenzo) romantic escapades with her toyboy Che and her more mature and financially stable older boyfriend, Leslie, the film takes us on a journey of discovery of what it means to be a modern woman. Nyarai and her friends need to figure the direction to take their lives, without simultaneously upsetting too many people.
Shot on location in and around Harare Playing Warriors is pleased to be showcasing local talent as in addition to Kudzai Sevenzo, it also stars Prudence Katomene -Mbofana, Tendai Musoni and Nothando Nobengula whilst the love interests are played by John Pfumojena as the fun-loving Che and Edmore Sandifolo as Leslie, the elegant and successful man about town. Local favourites Walter Muparutsa and Elizabeth Nyanguridza feature as Nyarai’s parents and there are humorous cameo roles from Gavin Peters, Edgar Langeveldt , Michael Kudakwashe and Ben Mahaka.
The film is a co-production between Mai Jai Films and Pangolin Films, produced by long time colleagues and friends Jackie Cahi and Rumbi Katedza . Playing Warriors is supported by the Goteborg Film Festival Fund and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fonds Images Afrique with local support from the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust and the Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust.
The opening will be on October 28 but the tickets are already on sale for $10 at Zimbojam, Alliance Francaise and the Book Café. Zimbo Jam
