Its party time in Harare and it will be so all the way into the New Year as Southern Africa’s most successful team were crowned 2011 Premier Soccer League Champions after beating Kiglon 2 – 0 at Rufaro Stadium. De Mbare are deserved champions in a season where they were an example to all of the consistency and winning mentality required to win a league. Huge credit needs to be given to head coach Callisto Pasuwa, who engineered what must be one of the greatest turnarounds in Premier Soccer League history.
The final game of the league season was far from a formality, and a plucky Kiglon showed why they have successfully derailed previous Dynamos title charges by doggedly keeping the scoreline at nil all for almost the entire first half. Needing nothing short of victory, the class of 2011 were not be denied, and literally seconds before the half time whistle, man of the moment Roderick Mutuma put the Glamour Boys ahead with his 14th of the season.
Kiglon, who were guaranteed relegation before the start of the match, were determined to go down fighting and continued to provide stiff resistance. Tension was high as title rivals FC Platinum who were level on points were simultaneously putting the sword to the Wild Boys Shooting Stars at Gwanzura. But as with every champion team, when the tension is high, there are big players who step up and win the day. It was none other than Dynamos’ rock in defence, Guthrie Zhokinyi who rose up high to meet David Kutyauripos cross and head home the decisive goal on 88 minutes, effectively sealing the victory making Mbare easily the happiest place on earth for that moment in time.
