Banyana Banyana Dance Group Pays tribute to Dhewa

YOUTHFUL dance outfit, Banyana Bafana paid an emotional tribute to the late sungura maestro Tongai Dhewa Moyo at a glamourous end of year cocktail party at Garwe Restaurant last week. The dance outfit gave an outstanding show where they performed Dhewa's hit Muchina Muhombe. One of the dancers said, “Dhewa was our friend in the arts industry.

“We shared the stage with him on several occasions. “We use most of his songs whenever we perform all over the country “It hurts that he is no more after a long struggle with cancer. “He went through hell but we opted to celebrate his life. “Today, we remember his great works and his music will never fade”.

H-Metro heard that the popular dance group last shared stage with Dhewa in July at City Sports Bar. Meanwhile, Garwe Restaurant owner Mandy Mvukwe was in tears as she joined Banyana Bafana and son of the late Dhewa, Peter Moyo on stage. Shiga Shiga was not spared from the act and he joined the group to spice up the performance.

The chanter gave a touching speech thanking Mandy for supplying Dhewa with ethnic dishes during his last days. “I want to thank you Mai Garwe for your support. Vaibikira mudhara vari kuchipatara (She would cook for Dhewa whilst in hospital). “God bless you mama, he said.

Another performer, only identified as General Defao left the crowd begging for more after his energetic dances. The burly dancer also won an award as one of the most consistent customers at Garwe. He walked away with a free meal voucher and a live hanga. Garwe restaurant, situated in Eastlea was voted the country’s best ethnic restaurant for 2011 at this year’s Tourism Awards held in Masvingo.
