The new Utakataka Express frontman Peter Moyo lived up to expectations when he took Mutare by storm at the weekend sending a clear and loud message that he is the right man for the job. The son of the late icon, Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo, has proved that he is a man to look up to in musical circles and with hard work and proper guidance, Peter will rock Zimbabwe’s music scene to keep alive his father’s legacy.
Most bands in Zimbabwe eventually died natural deaths following the passing away of their leaders. This is due to a number of reasons, such as infighting among remaining members. Utakataka Express spokesperson Shiga-Shiga said in an interview at Chapter One where the band performed on Saturday night said divisions that threatened to tear apart Dhewa’s legacy were a thing of the past.
“The band is working very well and we are united. Peter is still young and he is working very hard. He is improving day by day and if he keeps doing well like, this he will be a surprise to Zimbabwe. “You can actually tell from the way he handles himself on stage and off-stage that he is determined to replace his late father. We will launch our next project with him early next march,” he said.
Peter played most of his father’s famous hits with ease, much to the appreciation of the cheerful Mutare fans, who applauded his presentation. The climax of the show was when he took over the lead guitar to perform one of Dhewa’s celebrated hits, Samanyemba. Mutare-based music promoter Brian Samaita urged fans and music promoters to continue supporting the young artist.
“Peter is fitting in well in his father’s shoes and he is fully booked up to December. This is clear sign that promoters are willing to support him. I would urge all Utakatata fans to put their weight behind Peter,” said Samaita. (NewsDay)
