Instant fame and success have always been hard to manage with some artistes having suffered their demise at the hands of the sweet feeling of success. They tend to grow quite big-headed, feel important and in the process, lose direction. One young lad Emegy Sylvester Chizhanga popularly known to many as Freeman is positively using that same feeling of success to scale his career to greater heights.
Currently, the hottest thing on the local market in the urban groove genre, Freeman made noise and caught the hearts of many with the hit track "Joina City" which instantly became a favourite of many. The dancehall sensation stepped into the music arena in 2004 when he did a track "Tariro" that he featured on his debut album.
His popular "Joina City" is arguably one of the biggest hits for the year 2011, and is still rocking the airwaves dominating the charts as well. However, people have always mistaken the Joina City mentioned in his track to be the towering building in Harare's city centre. Freeman instead argues that "Joina City" (the track) was inspired by his love for the Dubai Joina.
"I had a friend in Dubai who would send me pictures of this place called Joina in Dubai, It is beautiful. So I have always fantasised of taking my girl there, that's how Joina City came about", he said. Born in Bindura, the microphone chanter has always had a strong affinity for music having been part of his school choir.
Once labelled a one-hit wonder Freeman is certainly proving critics wrong as he has gone on to churn out more blazing dancehall pieces such as "Summertime". The 23-year-old has been credited by many for changing the dynamics in local dancehall. He is said to be the only real competition to Winky D who has undoubtedly dominated the local scene for quite some time now. Freeman dismissed the rumours which have been making rounds linking him in a purported battle with Winky D. "My brother," he said, "I would like to make it clear there is absolutely no bad blood between me and Winky D.
"Actually we have performed together in a couple of shows. I hugely respect the Bigman; he has brought local dancehall to another level". Following the success of his debut album "Tapinda muStyra" the "Joina City" hitmaker says he is still hungry for more and would like to kick it up a gear further. He has collaborated with UK-based Jusa Dementor on a track called "Patakatanga" that is making waves in dancehall music circles.
The former Chipadze student and Abra Simms put up a splendid performance at Zindoga Shopping Centre in July this year where they were supporting acts to Spanish dancehall artiste Swan Fyahbwoy. Currently, Freeman is working on his second album, which is set for release early next year. (Herald)
