It is indeed disturbing to learn that the fund set up by Minister Shamu to raise money to assist Tongai Moyo's family has not attracted the much needed donations as anticipated. It is indeed sad that the corporate community and the public in general who Dhewa worked tirelessly to entertain during his short lived life are not turning a back in the darkest hour of his family. The late sungura maestro, Tongai Moyo’s trust fund set up after his death has raised only $500. It will now be handed over to Minister of Information Webster Shamu. Shamu, who is also the Zimbabwe Union of Musicians’ patron set up the Dhewa Trust Fund after the musician’s death and tasked businessman Esau Mupfumi to manage it.
During the launch of Moyo’s documentary, Tongai Moyo: The Show Goes On, last month Mupfumi said the trust fund received an initial US$500 from various people since it was launched. He said while the initial target was to raise US$20 000 for Moyo’s trust fund, things had not gone the way everyone anticipated.Mupfumi said: “While we have been lobbying for the fund, we have had the media who are supposed to partner with us in publicising the cause saying nothing. As a result we have had little response for the purse.”
Mupfumi said he was only tasked with managing the funds and would soon hand it over to the minister. “The minister will then hand over the money to the family. I haven’t delayed with the money as I was still trying to mobilise for more. I will be handing the purse and the fund to minister Shamu who tasked me with managing it,” said Mupfumi.
