Hip-Hop Awards on cards

THE FIRST-EVER Zimbabwe Hip Hop Awards will take place at the exquisite 7 Arts Theatre on December 7. A brainchild of Aldrian Harrison, the founder and executive designer for AH Clothing & Unleashed, an online hip hop magazine, the awards are aimed at giving exposure to unsigned Zimbabwean Hip Hop artistes giving them a platform to showcase their talents to their own people before taking it beyond the borders.
In an interview with H-Metro, Harrison said: “The awards’ focus mainly on Hip Hop as we believe it is a genre that lacks an audience in our country due to receiving poor airplay and lack of capital for these artists to fully utilise their talents. The awards will also pay tribute to the veterans and increasing visibility of the music.”

Harrison has brought together a contingent of Zimbabwe's best hip hop musicians for this awards ceremony creating an event of national significance. The list of performers at the ceremony will include Tehn Diamond, MC Chita, Stunner and a host of additional musicians. “The definition of hip hop has always been clear the hip hop culture is hinged on four elements, dee-jaying, dancing, rapping and graffiti. It was with this definition that the Zim Hip Hop Unleashed magazine has tried to determine which artists should be nominated for this year's Zim Hip Hop Awards,” Harrison added.

Zim Hip Hop Unleashed has deliberately left out graffiti from the categories. “Of the categories considered for nomination we have left out graffiti because of some real legal implications. Graffiti has not yet reached a level of acceptance in our community to afford us nominees who would be willing to be identified.”

Since the early 90’s Hip hop music has won the hearts of many in Zimbabwe. “Early trail blazers include Bless, Peace of Ebony, Mau Mau, Phathood artiste, the late King Pin, Mo V.I.P and David Chifunyise among others.” (HMetro)
