Lisa ready to take on the world

Zimbabwe's representative to the Miss International Beauty Pageant Lisa Morgan says she has fully prepared for the contest that is expected to be held in China next week. In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Lisa said she has been working hard on grooming, deportment, in addition to taking part in other pre-judging contests.

Being an architect, Lisa revealed that she has also been devoting her time to sightseeing and enjoying the beauty of Chinese architecture. "I have been visiting a lot of places in Chengdu from the time I got here. I have also been giving myself time to marvel at Chinese architecture and being an architect myself, I admire other people's creations," she said via email.

Although conceding that competition will be tough, because of the calibre of other models, she said her chances of clinching the coveted prize were high. "Every lady here is a winner already because to be here they went through a thorough screening process. It is a tough competition, all the participants are beautiful, but I must say that I stand a good chance," she said.

Despite the challenges she is facing, she admits that the whole experience has been fantastic. In her wall posting to her more than 400 Facebook friends, Lisa said she was excited that she was going to represent Zimbabwe at such a prestigious event, something she had dreamt of while growing up. "Last night (Sunday) I danced my heart out and gave the rest of the world the biggest scare . . . the Americans love my dressing lolest! I am getting ready for the big day November 6 ," she posted. At just the age of 20, Lisa has had her dream come true - she is the reigning Miss Universe Zimbabwe, after having come a long way.

In 2007, she was crowned Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and her soft spot for the underprivileged and marginalised came to the fore when she immediately pledged to work towards assisting street kids. A product of Thornhill High School in Gweru, and a Midlands tourism ambassador, the self-assertive model said she derives so much inspiration from the beauty of Zimbabwe. Lisa - who cites Tyra

Banks as her idol - once defined a true model as: "Someone with beauty and brains and able to hold the country in the palms of their hands." When she was voted Miss Universe Zimbabwe she committed herself to working towards various other projects and one of them was the kidney awareness campaign she undertook with help fromthe Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and the Rainbow Tourism Group. In September this year, the vivacious model raised at least US$10 000 during a fund-raising dinner held in Harare.

The money was meant to assist two boys who wanted kidney treatment - Jonathan Jones and Dalubuhle Moyo. Rumours that she had a baby that circulated in January this year threatened to derail her career but being the confident person that she is, she weathered the storm by proving that the stories were not true.

"I have no baby, if I had one (baby) why would I enter the pageant," she quipped then. In June, Lisa and three other models - Miss Zimbabwe Malaika Mushandu, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Rumbidzai Mudzengerere and Miss Talent Nadia Gori - went to China and represent Zimbabwe at the Beijing International Tourism Expo.
