The festive season will indeed be festive for Sungura lovers as Alick “Extrabasso” Macheso has a Christmas package for his fans. Midlands residents are in for a treat this season as Macheso will stage shows in their province. Macheso together with Tryson Chimbetu and Girls LA Musica will perform in Gweru (December 22), Kwekwe (December 23) and Kadoma (December 24). The shows are being organised by Honds Power Promotions.
Isau Hondora of Honds Power Promotions encouraged people to come as they had organised everything. “Everything has been done and we have talked to Macheso and his managers. It is now left to the people to attend the shows as the venues and everything else is settled. Due to the rain season all shows will be in halls,” he said.
“We at Honds Power Promotions have been promoting Alick Macheso since 2000. We have done shows with him all over the country. So we urge people to come as the year ends in their numbers because this will be the best show of the year,” said Hondora. William Tsandukwa, Macheso’s manager confirmed the shows, adding that he will also perform in Harare over the Christmas holiday.
“He will be playing in Midlands after that he will come to Harare. The fans here will get a chance to celebrate Christmas with him as he will hold a show at the Sports Diner on December 25,” he said. “I cannot give you details on what he will be offering but I am sure he has a surprise for the fans,” said Tsandukwa. Alick Macheso is one of the greatest Sungura musicians the country has ever seen, together with the late Tongai Moyo. and long playing instrumentals on all of his songs.
The artist has been constantly in the news for the most controversial reasons but still manages to charm his legion of followers through his music. Macheso and Chimbetu will next month release an album jointly. The album is currently in the final stages of recording at Last Power recording stable, Macheso’s company. Tich Makahamadze, Artists and Repertoire Manager at Last Power said the album promises to be massive.
Macheso has taken Chimbetu, who used to record with Zimbabwe Music Corporation (ZMC), under his wing. The two are holding shows together and they might belt out songs from the coming album at their shows in Midlands. According to Memory Chirere, a University of Zimbabwe lecturer, Macheso has the unusual gift of poetry.
His lyrics elicit an easy-going camaraderie. He sings like the guy from next door, very familiar and liberating. That is why he is the favourite man of the ordinary mechanic, the unassuming kombi driver, the seller of ordinary wares and many more. If you look and listen, the Macheso’s lyrics appeal to the little and remote reserves of energy in the people of a country faced with economic challenges.
Listening to Upenyu Hwemunhu, you sit back in the kombi, and feel very private and secure. Indeed Upenyu Hwemunhu hunozivikanwa nemurarami wahwo — only the individual really knows where his/her life is. You want to laugh and cry, too, because in these moments of hardships we have all done many shameful things just in order to get to the next day.
Macheso has eight albums to his name but he has since become one of the best musicians to come out of Zimbabwe. However, he has been followed by controversy mainly involving women. (DailyNews)
