Ghana meets Naija Concert a success

This is how one Ghanaian artist stole the media spotlight. Rapper D-Black (Real name: Desmond Blackmore) was not directly billed to perform at the just ended second edition of “Ghana meets Naija” concert over the weekend, but all eyes were on him or more to the point on his friend.

The unidentified lady made such an impression that cameras were all on her. The Ghana meets Naija is a concert featuring both Ghana and Nigerian artists. The is the second time the event has been held.

Most of the artistes who performed at the event virtually sent the enthusiastic patrons into a frenzy, when they took the stage in turns and treated fans to unforgettable performances.

HARARE'S Africa Unity Square will reverberate with song and dance when dancehall man of the moment Winky D performs at the Coca-Cola Pimped Up Ride promotion to be held tomorrow. Dubbed "The Biggest Event of 2012", the show will also see humorous outfit Extra Large, King Shaddy and various other groups entertaining people at the event that starts at 10am. Four brand new Chevy vehicles are set for grabs to lucky winners and these will go with the "Ninja President" in charge.

After briefly going into slumber as most artists took a well-deserved break following hectic festive season programmes, the showbiz scene erupts into activity with a top-drawer gig featuring Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, Sulumani “Sulu” Chimbetu, Munya Mataruse and Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave at City Sports Centre on January 27.

Dubbed “First Gig of the Year,” the show is billed to lead the 2012 entertainment calendar in style. It is yet another affair comprising various genres, notably dendera, katekwe, jazz and gospel. For Sulu, Tuku and Mataruse it will be a continuation of a fruitful combination that saw them sharing the stage at various successful outings last year.

Abba to rock South Africa

THE Johannesburg Theatre celebrates its 50th anniversary with the best and diverse array of productions. 

The international Abba Show performed by the Abbasolutely Fabbaulous cast, kicks off the celebrations at The Mandela Theatre at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on January 18, and runs until February 5.

It will definitely be fireworks when the newly crowned "Igwe", Peter Moyo, takes on sungura maestro Alick "Cheso Power" Macheso in what is promising to be the biggest gig this festive season. Showgoers will be in for a treat in the much-anticipated "Cheso/Dhewa" show, which takes the form of an epic battle featuring rising star Jah Prayzah. Jah Prayzah produces jazzed up urban grooves fused with mbira. The young artiste is behind the hit song "Sungano" and this year released his third studio album "Ngwarira Kuparara", which carries the songs "Msango", "Chibvumirano", "Maria", "Chii?" "Daka" and the title track "Ngwarira".

The 23-year-old singer begins the festive season on a high note after being accorded a slot in the much-hyped Titanic Clash headlined by Alick Macheso and Oliver Mtukudzi on Friday night at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex. 

Although the attention would be on Tuku and Macheso, it should be mentioned that Tryson Chimbetu has the potential to steal the show judging by his current form.

In an interview with H-Metro, Tryson who is likely to be the opening act, said: “I can’t wait for the show. I am full of energy and I have reserved everything for the special day. “It’s a big event because both artistes (Tuku and Macheso) are crowd pullers and I feel I should prove a point. “I am humbled to be associated with the titans of Zimbabwean music.

Chitungwiza revellers will this Friday have the best of both worlds when two of Zimbabwe's prominent musicians, Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso, clash at the Aquatic Complex, in what could turn out to be one of the best gigs this year. Despite their different genres, the two are undoubtedly expected to blend their 40-year cumulative experience in the showbiz and make Friday a night to remember, when they play an array of their compilations.

Dendera musician Sulumane Chimbetu and upcoming jazz crooner Jean Masters do have a lot in common. They are both young, love their music to bits, relate fairly well with their fans and both have a strong musical background. And it appears they also enjoy a "professional romance" on stage, which continues to flourish every day, judging by the number of joint shows they have been holding since the beginning of this year.

Their professional "romance" has blossomed at Jazz 105 and Mushandirapamwe Hotel in Highfield, where their act has been well received. Tonight the duo will take their "affair" to another level at Jazz 105 in Harare, where they are expected to fuse dendera old school classics with afro-jazz music.

The gig comes barely a month after the two collaborated on stage, at Cresta Oasis in Harare. Despite their different genres, fans are often awe-struck by their aptitude, level of ingenuity, making their duets flawless despite their different sounding genres.

King Shady and Stunner to tour UK

THREE of the country’s finest urban grooves artistes, Desmond “Stunner” Chideme, Enock “Nox” Guni and Shadreck Kwarire aka King Shady the Jack Bauer are set to tour the United Kingdom next month AGAIN. The tour is dubbed the Three Kings Tour and the trio is set to tour five cities in the United Kingdom kicking off on December 17.

They are visiting the UK on the invitation of UK based promoter Everjoy Kurangwah in collaboration with Madboiz Entertainment. Kurangwah confirmed the tour to H-Metro. “Yes, we will be hosting the trio next month and their first show will be on December 17 in Dunstable, Luton.

Clash of the Titans As the Year comes to a close

The country’s most popular musical artistes, Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso, will once again, for the second time this year, return to the stage in a show dubbed “Titanic Clash” on December 2 at the Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza. After the resounding success of a similar show in August, the musicians will be looking forward to treating their fans to another top-drawer event.

Zimbabwe’s most successful music act, Oliver Mtukudzi, will this afternoon headline an eagerly-awaited music show to honour the late Oliver Tambo, one of the founding fathers of South Africa’s democracy. Ahead of the event scheduled for Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, organisers revealed Mtukudzi would be the main act.

Zimbabwean music icon Oliver Mtukudzi will be in Zambia in a fortnight’s on a two-show tour. Mtukudzi will be supported by The Sakala Brothers on his Let’s Celebrate concert tour. The Zimbabwean will hold his first performance at Portico Restaurant Lusaka on November 18.
