Sulumani Chimbetu has decided to try his luck in the United Kingdom again after falling prey to bogus promoters on his maiden tour last year. The popular dendera musician has lined up UK shows over Easter holidays. Chimbetu’s manager Knowledge Nkoma told NewsDay they were putting final touches to tour arrangements.
“We are yet to finalise the arrangements that include visas and work permits. We cannot really say much, but we will be going to UK for shows, during the Easter holidays,” said Nkoma. “We are also happy this time around we have met someone sincere unlike Arthur Janjawa who invited us for our maiden tour. The new promoter used to work with Sulu’s father for overseas shows, so we are happy with him.”
The last time Chimbetu went to the UK the deal was botched before the end of scheduled shows leaving numerous dendera lovers heartbroken. “I will not forget the last time that I went to the UK. The promoter somehow thought we were stupid. You can imagine he said he wanted me to play at the Royal Wedding and that is when I realised that the whole deal was doomed,” said Chimbetu in an earlier interview.
“If we had not taken some money with us that was enough to cater for the band’s welfare, we would have become destitute in the UK. “What happened is that we did not know Janjawa was the promoter of that tour because he used someone to contract us. We knew him from before as a con artist, but he only showed up when it was too late for us to reverse the deal.” (Newsday)
