I’m my own man: Tryson

Tryson Chimbetu
THE enterprising dendera protégé, Tryson Chimbetu, says that he does bask in the past glory or rely on music done by late dendera legends — Simon and Naison — for survival in the industry. Speaking for the first time since the media broke the story that his career hinged on Simon’s works, Tryson said he was his own man, adding that his brand had grown over the years.

“When I play music from my late uncle (Simon), I am not in any way trying to base my career on his works, but I am simply trying to carry the Chimbetu and dendera legacy forward. “Everyone in the family knows that. We want the dendera legacy to continue,” he said.

With the “guidance” of established sungura ace — Alick Macheso — the leader of the Marxist Brothers seems to have mastered what it takes to be among the most sought-after musicians at the moment. Tonight, his ingenuity will be on the line when he takes his act to Pamuzinda Highway Escape, as usual, backing Macheso.

This is the second time this year that the two will be sharing the stage at the joint, which has almost become like a second home ground for Macheso, whose “home base” is the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex. The two artistes have been holding joint shows in the last two years and tonight’s show will further strengthen their relationship.

As has been the case with their previous performances, Macheso is expected to join Tryson on stage and do some duets on one or two of his (Tryson) songs, which are currently receiving heavy rotation on radio and at many entertainment spots in the country. With less hullabaloo drifting towards Tryson as compared to his cousin Sulumani, his recent performances at the 21st Gala and the Holly’s Night Club, a show he held with Peter Moyo, he proved that he can be a force to reckon with.

He has released three albums, namely “Marxist Revival”, “Bvamrod” and the latest “Nguva yaChimbetu” and his star keeps rising with each outing. Tryson also played down any form of acrimony between him and Sulumani suggesting that there could be a duet by the two dendera exponents in future.

“Sulumani and I are not enemies and people can actually expect a song or two from us because anything is possible,” he added. Meanwhile, it looks like it is going to be a dendera affair this weekend, when Tryson will further carry his torch to Sports Diner International in the company of none other than his trusted mentor Macheso, tomorrow night.

The party continues on Sunday when Tryson visits Megga 1 Sports Bar and fans should expect nothing short of quality music. In fact, Tryson’s musical career is on a progressive pedestal and all he needs is to keep his positive attitude. His act is versatile and highly calculated.

When he gets on stage, he is among the few musicians who play their music based on the fans’ revelling mood. His shows, which start off at Pamuzinda tonight and end at Megga 1 on Sunday should give fans ample time to access the young man’s ability and I have no doubt that they are going to enjoy every bit of it.
