Tryson Chimbetu |
Dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu says he will soon be a force to reckon with in the music industry. Cousin to Suluman and the son of the late Naison Chimbetu, the other half of the legendary Marxist Brothers, Tryson has in recent months worked hard to live up to the family name.
The budding musician has had the fortune of being taken under the wing of sungura ace Alick Macheso for whom he has curtain-raised at fully packed shows, getting the much-needed exposure and experience in the process. With Macheso, he has had experiences the majority of musicians of his age can only dream of. And he says this year, he will “graduate” and will be holding many shows where he will be the main act.
“Since I embarked on my musical career, I have been the major supporting act for Macheso, but this year I will be trying my luck as a main act. So far, I have done a number of shows in and outside Harare and the response has been overwhelming and encouraging,” said Tryson.
Flying high with his recently released six-track album titled Bvamrod (short for ibva muroad/get out of the way), Tryson will today be holding a family show at the Mega 1 Bar, where he will be supported by the talented jazz outfit Too Open.
An official at Mega 1 said they had been monitoring Tryson’s shows and had been impressed by the young lad’s exploits. “He is a good musician and we are positive that he is going to go places.
We have worked with him before but as a supporting act. This time around we have hired his services as the main act and we hope to have a fruitful working relationship with him,” said the official adding, “the young man is consistent and has a good stage act.”
The dendera musician was also upbeat about the family show. “All our fans should come for the family show at Mega1 Bar and witness us in action. We now have new dance routines and have since modified the previous manoeuvres. I think I learnt a lot from Alick Macheso.
“This year, as a group we will be focusing more on standing on our own. We are going to embark on a countrywide tour so that we give our out-of-Harare fans a chance to get a feel of our live performances,” he said.
The young lad has indeed benefited from his association with Macheso. At the recently held 21st February Movement gala, Dr Nero (as Tryson is fondly referred to by his fans) gave a spirited performance that left fans asking for more. He also gave fans more than they bargained for when he performed in the capital last week. His attack line (dancers), which now includes three of Sulu’s former dancers, is a marvel to watch.
