Violence rocked dancehall king Winky D’s show in Mutare at the weekend, with organisers describing the red hot star as “big-headed”. Hundreds who had packed the Pavilion Watering Hole in the eastern border city turned violent after Winky D first refused to perform citing a poor sound system and then put up a poor show when he did take to the stage.

Winky D, who was expected to perform from around midnight for about two hours, performed for less than an hour even after arriving two hours late.The Pavilion experienced one of its worst violent scenes as disgruntled patrons stoned organisers and slightly damaged the public address system on learning that Winky D had snubbed the gig claiming the PA system was of poor quality.

This forced organisers to convince Winky D, who was holed at a local hotel to perform. The damage had already been done when he arrived for the show. Obey “Big Fish” Hove, the managing director of the pavilion was a bitter man after the show, castigating the artist for an “unprofessional attitude”.

“It is sad that Winky D chose to drag the Pavilion Watering Hole brand through the mud as he did. We are unhappy over his conduct which we feel will not help anyone if he continues to act in that manner,” said Hove. Winky D’s coming to Mutare had been long awaited by the majority of his fans who range from youngsters to adults. The performer, popularly known as the “Bigiman” had attracted hundreds of people at the open venue only to bungle at the last minute.

Winky D last played in Mutare 20 months ago. The artist’s manager, Jonathan “Shumba” Banda could not be reached for comment over the Saturday incident. Dailynews
