Jazz 105 to honour Sulu

Sulumani Chimbetu

Harare’s nightclub, Jazz 105 will be hosting a party in honour of Suluman Chimbetu. Chimbetu, who has been playing at the joint for the past three years, will be honoured for his Outstanding Musician of the Year award he recently received for his album NonStop.

Jazz 105 manager Yassin Dhala said since Chimbetu had been performing for a long time at the venue they felt obliged to honour him. “At Jazz 105 we are celebrating Sulu’s award. We usually deal with him. Of course there are others who won awards, but we have watched Sulu grow. Since Sulu already had a show at the club on Friday, we decided to combine it with our party,” he said.
Sulu will be supported by Munya Mataruse. “We wanted to honour him and give him a token of appreciation which we have not decided on though. It might not be monetary but it will be something to show how much we appreciate his presence at the club,” said Dhala.

The Nama Awards were held two weeks ago in Harare with several surprise winners. This year Sulu is expected to embark on another United Kingdom (UK) tour. Despite controversy surrounding both his personal and private life Sulu seems to be doing well. Last month he was reported to have been dragged to court over maintenance.

He is also reported to have received death threats after Franco Slomo, Elton Muropa and Noel Nyazanda left Macheso for him.
