Man of the moment Peter “Dhewa” Moyo will tomorrow give the Chitungwiza folk something to smile about when he storms Moonlight Night Club at Makoni Shopping Centre. The Kwekwe-based musician will share the stage with arguably one of the country's best guitarists — Rodrick Chomudhara — at a show that promises nothing but fireworks.

Currently riding high on a wave of popularity after holding his own in the music world, Peter has surprised many with the way he has managed to fill the big shoes left by his late father Tongai.

Meanwhile, Chomudhara, who performed with Suluman Chimbetu at Club Paramount, located in Chitungwiza as well, is gaining ground and has shared the stage with a number of both upcoming as well as established artistes.

Moyo urged fans from both Chitungwiza and Harare to come and witness a top-drawer act. “We are encouraging our fans to come in their numbers since we will be playing a number of new songs from our yet-to-be released album,” he said. The “Young Igwe” is no stranger at Moonlight Night Club, having held several shows at the joint before. Herald

Peter Moyo finishes Dhewa's house in Kwekwe

Peter Moyo, the son of the late sungura maestro musician Tongai, is about to complete building his late father’s house in Kwekwe’s Mbizo suburb.

He is planning to throw a house warming party at the new family home next month. The project was started off by the late musician, but he could not complete it owing to poor health and financial constraints.

When he passed on in October last year, Peter known by his fans as “Young Igwe”,immediately took over the project and began mobilising funds to finish building the house.

“Although I had other things that needed my immediate attention such as paying off the debts that the old man accrued during his last days as he battled to contain his condition, I knew I had to finish the project first.

When Tongai Moyo sadly passed on last year, his multitudes of fans were grief stricken. The whole music fraternity was shocked at the sudden death of the Sungura maestro. Many thought that was the end of the 'Dhewa' legacy. Muchina muhombe was gone so was his music legacy.

Little did the music fraternity know that, his son Peter Moyo would rise and take up the challenge to keep his father's legacy alive. Peter was thrust in in a huff to stand for his father during his last days on earth. The younster quickly learnt the ropes and stood in his father's very BIG shoes. Since then Peter has never looked back.

Revellers cant get enough of Young igwe

Peter Moyo made a surprise appearance at the show pitting Alick Macheso and the Muddy Face at the City Sports Gardens on Sunday. The “Young Igwe” as Moyo is affectionately called, stunned revellers by his unexpected showing and left them asking for more.

The young man seems to be enjoying a purple patch on the entertainment scene. It was a fascinating show that was opened by the promising Muddy Face, who managed to keep revellers on their feet as they chanted their tunes.

Macheso charmed many with his unmatched bass guitar playing skills as he strummed the late Andy Brown’s “Mapurisa”, drawing people closer to the stage, in an emotional tribute to “Muzukuru”. Macheso was joined on stage by the Young Igwe when he did a rendition of Tongai Moyo’s popular “Samanyemba” tune, much to the delight of the patrons, who went into a frenzy. Cheso Power pledged his support to upcoming artistes.

Peter Moyo to release debut album in October

Sungura music prodigy Peter “Dhewa” Moyo says he will honour his late father Tongai by releasing his debut album on October 15, the date on which the latter died. 

The “Young Igwe”, as Moyo is affectionately referred to in the music circles, revealed he had lost count of the number of songs he has penned so far, but that his maiden album would contain five or six songs including his late father’ compositions.

Man-of-the-moment Peter Moyo and energetic dendera artiste Tryson Chimbetu lock horns at the Holly’s Hotel tomorrow. The show, designed in a manner that would leave any father green with envy, will see the two musicians revive their fathers’ legacies. The show comes hard on the heels of the 21st Movement Gala in Chipinge where the two wowed the thousands that thronged the venue.

Dynamite comes in small pack­ages and this adage will be proven right when young musicians Peter Moyo and Tryson Chimbetu go it alone without riding on the coat-tails of music legends Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso. The duo has been curtain-raising for the big artistes but this time around they decided to stand on their own when they perform at the newly-refurbished Holly’s Hotel on March 10. 

Both have been enjoying a fine run in their music careers with Tryson launching his third album, “Nguva YaChimbetu”, at Super Label in Harare last week. The Marxist Brothers frontman has also been doing well with his album, “Bvamrod”, that was well received last year.

More Utakataka exodus to Mutodi’s band

Two Utakataka Express band members are reportedly about to leave the Kwekwe-based outfit to join Energy Mutodi’s Real Sounds of Africa. Drummer Gaison Sixpence and the lead guitarist only identified as Archford are set to follow their former colleagues Shiga Shiga and bassist Spencer Khumbulani.

Sources say the two have been promised hefty packages that include a Toyota Mark II for Sixpence while the package of the lead guitarist still has to be verified. Speaking to the Daily News Utakataka Express band manager Suko Shoko confirmed the development.
