Tryson debuts in solo performance

Tryson Chimbetu
High riding dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu will tonight rock the popular joint City Sports Bar where for the first time he performs as a solo act. Over the years Tryson has been featuring as an opening act for sungura ace, Alick Macheso. The sungura musician had taken into his wings Tryson, who is always billed to warm up Mberikwazvo concerts.

In the process he has won himself the approval of many fans as he fights for recognition with the dendera music genre popularised by his late father, Naison and late uncle Simon. While Tryson was being groomed by Macheso, it would be interesting to see how the young dendera singer would fare when he takes over the night’s slot.

On his recent concert at the City Sports Bar Macheso announced it was now time for Tryson to stage concerts on his own.“As a father I groomed Tryson and I am convinced he is now ripe to face the crowds on his own,” said the Tafadzwa Nyarara hit-maker. Taking his mentor’s advice, Tryson recently staged a number of concerts in Harare’s entertainment joints such as Super Label where his concert was spiced up by the dancing queen Beverly Sibanda aka Bev.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, Tryson and Marxist Brothers band manager Phillip Dzivike said the concerts were meant to taste the market. “As a son you have to show maturity so as to please your father. We are still loyal to Macheso but we are working towards weaning ourselves. “During the weekends we will curtain raise Macheso’s concerts while during the week we will stage our own concerts which we take as yard sticks to measure our position within the market,” said Dzivike.

The Marxist Brothers is pleased by the response they are receiving from fans since they started sailing alone.
“Fans are requesting for more mid-week concerts and we are responding to their call. What pleased the group is Macheso’s steadfast support. He even attended some of our concerts to judge the performances and he is very happy,” said Dzivike. A couple of weeks ago Tryson managed to perform before a fully-packed house at Super Label in the capital even though his rival young Igwe Peter Moyo of Utakataka was performing at the nearby joint, City Sports Bar.

Tryson, the eldest son of the late musician Naison Chimbetu popularly known as Dr Nero in the showbiz then, is among the likes of Suluman, Allan and Douglas who are flying high the dendera music flag raised by their fathers in mid-70s.

Tryson has three albums under his name, Marxist Revival, Bvamrod and the latest Nguva YaChimbetu which features Macheso on two tracks, Vegetables and Shingirira. City Sports Bar director Biggie Chinoperekwei said his club had actually lined-up a series of concerts featuring sons of legends.

“We have since discovered that we could be doing ourselves wonders by engaging sons of late great musicians as they revive their fathers’ legacies. We have hosted quite a number of them at the joint so far, among them Peter Moyo and the Dembo sons. “So far we are happy with the way they have exhibited their talents and we hope to continue giving them the much-needed space. It is a way to promote youthful talent. We are setting the pace as we see these as tomorrow’s stars,” said Chinoperekwei.

He said the mid-week gigs were proving to be popular with revellers. “Most revellers are starved of good entertainment during the week and we have since capitalised on this. Our revellers are happy with the development.” (Dailynews)
