BBA Stargame: Who is representing Zim?

With a few days left before the seventh edition of Big Brother Africa (BBA) kicks off, followers of the show in Zimbabwe are in suspense as to who will represent the country. Last month, organisers of the show revealed this years season would be themed Big Brother Stargame and it remains to be seen if the housemates will be stars/celebrities or if celebrities will feature in the house frequently, not necessarily as housemates.

Sulu in maiden live DVD act

The DVD will also be a tribute to Sulu’s late father. DENDERA musician Sulumani Chimbetu will have a live DVD recording of some of his best songs at the Book Café in Harare tonight. Some of the songs are taken off his award-winning album “Non-Stop” and the DVD is a way of reaching out to his fans that don’t normally get the chance to attend his shows.

Blessing Shumba collaborates with Madzibaba

Rising gospel star Blessing Shumba is working on a song with sungura artist Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria which will feature on the upcoming musician’s album to be released in October. Shumba said all has been settled with Zakaria and the two will go into the studio in August for the song.

Sulumani and Tryson Chimbetu Feud Over Songs comes to an end

Sulumani Chimbetu and his cousin have decided to settle their dispute over family songs, bringing an end to the Dendera war that had sparked criticism across the music industry. Speculation was rife that there was bad blood between the Chimbetus after Sulumani approached the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (Zimura) seeking an order to bar any musician from playing his late father’s songs.

Sungura giant has been dumped by the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa), as he was preparing for the festival. Hifa said he had nothing new to offer this year. Hifa roars into life on Tuesday. After making initial contact and plans with Macheso’s management for the star’s return to the festival, the organisers of Hifa are reported to have abruptly cancelled the negotiations.

It is Tuku’s debut at the popular arts hub which relocated and re-opened in March, but not the first collaboration between the two award-winning artistes. Tuku recorded on Sulu’s song Kwedu in 2010, sharing a verse, and they have done on-stage collaborations “here and there.

Dancehall musician Donald Chirisa, well-known in music circles as Sniper Storm or The General, is to pay Mutare-based gospel musician Blessing Shumba money over the use of the song Hama without Shumba’s consent.

Sniper lately released a hit single titled Godo, a song which he pinned on the beat from Shumba’s song Hama. The song tells of a prayer with Sniper asking God to help him to deal with jealously and sometimes he includes lyrics from Mufaro Chete, another song by Shumba.

ZIMBABWEAN music legend Oliver Mtukudzi is billed to share the stage with his Senegalese counterpart, Ishmael Lo, at the closing ceremony of this year’s edition of the Harare International Festival of the Arts at the Telecel Main Stage in the Harare Gardens on Sunday May 6.

The event has been earmarked as a special occasion for the festival with the Zimbabwean music  doyen celebrating his 60th birthday. And to add to the thrill will be inclusion of the Senegalese music wizard who will have to wait for an extra day just to partner with Tuku for the momentous concert.

Urban grooves “King of Swag” Desmond Stunner Chideme recently travelled to Malaysia where he received an award. The award was for the African Entertainment Awards (AEA) in the category of best Southern African male artist.

The AEAs are three years old and according to their website were formed to recognise African talent.
This year is their most successful as they have included artists from Africa. This is not Stunner’s first award as he earlier this year won three more accolades at the inaugural hip-hop awards in Zimbabwe.

Mashakada widow composes gospel song

The late musician Cephas Mashakada’s widow, Eunice, has composed a song Pane Shungudzangu, which she said would be released in two months’ time.

Eunice told NewsDay that after writing the song, she gave it to Shemu Chibage Mashonganyika, leader of Mashakada’s band, The Sounds of the Muddy Face, for finishing touches.

When Tongai Moyo sadly passed on last year, his multitudes of fans were grief stricken. The whole music fraternity was shocked at the sudden death of the Sungura maestro. Many thought that was the end of the 'Dhewa' legacy. Muchina muhombe was gone so was his music legacy.

Little did the music fraternity know that, his son Peter Moyo would rise and take up the challenge to keep his father's legacy alive. Peter was thrust in in a huff to stand for his father during his last days on earth. The younster quickly learnt the ropes and stood in his father's very BIG shoes. Since then Peter has never looked back.

There was chaos backstage at Freddy Gwala’s show at Richwood Sports Club in Harare on Sunday after his locally-assembled backing band refused to go on stage demanding a top-up performance fee. The local band was employed to back Gwala for his three-show tour when the South African musician arrived in the country with two vocalists instead of a full band.

In recent months I have been to a number of music concerts by sungura superstar Alick Macheso where I have seen him being abused by photographers. 

In today’s world where anyone has access to a camera, photographers have mushroomed everywhere and the lot I am referring to are usually in the habit of pulling their customers to the stage while Macheso is performing and standing them besides the star for photographs.
